The second time I plkayed a round of golf I was horrified to find that I had actually done better than the first time, that, to some significant degree, skill was in fact involved and I could, in exchange for enough money and many, many wasted hours, get better at it.

I have never been near a golf course since. I don't have enough life left to want to get better at golf.

The first time out, you are doing well if you are patient enough to complete the course, let alone mark up a score.

The first few times I played golf, I didn't even bother keeping score. If I kept score, I probably would have quit.

There's a life lesson in there somewhere.
