The Top 6 Home Trends of 2016

2016 is officially coming to an end and soon we’ll be ringing in the new year! But before we break out the bubbly for 2017, we want to take a look back and review the top home trends of the year.

From Chip & Joanna’s favorite building material to a stone that the masses just can’t get enough of, we’re highlighting all that was “cool” in 2016. Let’s take the tour.

1. Wallpaper

Yep, wallpaper made a big comeback this year and was surprisingly most often found in bathrooms. While it isn’t the easiest DIY project, it certainly makes a big impact in a small space. We suggest trying this trend in a powder room that does not have a shower. The reason? If it does have a shower, the moisture can cause the wallpaper to peel and that’s a look that will never be cool. But when it works, the style speaks for itself.

2. Shiplap

We can thank the Fixer Upper duo for the rise of this popular building material. Shiplap is everywhere and people can’t seem to get enough! From accent walls to bathrooms to even shiplap ceilings … this white wood was being used in just about every part of the home throughout 2016.

3. Tuxedo Kitchens

It used to be all about the white kitchens, but now the “tuxedo look” is in: dark cabinets on the bottom and lighter uppers. This is a great idea if you want to brighten up your kitchen space, but don’t necessarily want an all-white kitchen look.

4. Marble Accentsmarble-dining-room-table

Consider us all aboard the marble train because we just can’t seem to get enough of that luxe stone. Marble countertops are all the rage, but it doesn’t stop there. You’ll find marble tables, marble clocks, marble trays, marble cake stands … really we could go on and on. We’re hoping this trend is here to stay because it just looks and feels great.

5. Brass Fixtures

While marble was the stone of 2016, brass was definitely the finish of the year. Brass fixtures were seen all over the place in lighting, handles and faucets. Brass adds a bit of warmth to any space, and we especially loved it paired with a bright white.

6. Black Window Frames

While white trim still reigns supreme, black window frames are really making a comeback. Why not draw the eye to a spectacular view with a black window frame? We believe that every room should have a bit of black, but haven’t jumped aboard the window frame trend juuuust yet.

Will these trends be around through 2017? It’s hard to say. Instead, DIY Playbook finds it easiest to decorate if you follow our motto: “If you love it, it will never go out of style!”
