Plastic Crates: The Cardboard Box Alternative
Posted in: I'm Moving, Movehacks, Moving Boxes & SuppliesWhen most people have a move looming, oftentimes the first thing they tackle on their moving to-do list is “BUY CARDBOARD BOXES.” That often means a trip to the hardware store for a variety of box sizes, packing tape, and a sharpie marker for labeling.
But what if I told you that there are ways to transport all of your belongings without going anywhere near a cardboard box. Yeah…this is new to us too.
But there are a wide variety of cardboard alternative companies who specialize in moving crates. You order the crates, fill them up with your belongings, move, and then they come pick-up your unpacked crates. Not only will you save time by not having to assemble cardboard boxes (not exactly our strongest skill….), but these cardboard box alternatives are also a much more earth-friendly option. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular crate options on the market…
REDI-BOX

Redi-Box says their mission is to make moving “Easy, Economical, and Environmentally Friendly.” They deliver 100% recyclable plastic moving totes to your door at your current place. Then you pack them all up, move them to your new residence, and they come pick them up when you’re done moving. Simple enough, right?
This service is only available in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, so Redi-Box isn’t a viable option if you live (or are moving) elsewhere.
RENTACRATE

Unlike Redi-Box, Rentacrate services cities outside of the Chicagoland area and they also service moves of all kinds…from commercial, to government, to residential. The concept is very similar. You rent plastic crates, fill them up, and use them to move belongings from point A to point B.
They also say that you can use less of them when moving. According to their website, “Rentacrates are larger than boxes so you need 20 percent to 50 percent fewer crates than boxes which can reduce the number of truckloads you need by up to 40 percent.”
BUNGO BOX

BungoBox serves many cities throughout the US, with a majority servicing the eastern part of the country. Their motto? Move, unpack, now give ’em back. Pretty catchy if we do say so ourselves!
They even have “BungoWardrobes” which unlike the box, offer a convenient way to move your clothing without removing it from the hangers.
Now we can’t predict moving trends, but we will say that cardboard may be on its last leg. Move over cardboard…here come plastic crates!
We know there are many more crate options out there….tell us which companies we missed in the comments below!
