Does the sight of a grand piano make you cringe? Do you toss and turn the night before your men are scheduled to move a hundred-year-old, four hundred pound safe that is sitting in your customer’s upstairs office? Well consider how you might feel if you were the one in charge of moving a five-story brick tower? Yes, the whole thing. The Gay Head Lighthouse, dating back to 1800, stands less than fifty feet from the eroding Aquinnah Cliffs along the western edge of Martha’s Vineyard, just off the southwest coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and must be relocated – and soon – lest it fall into the waters it has kept safe for the last 200 years.
How tough a job is it to move a lighthouse? Well, consider this: The job will pay well over $1 million – and International Chimney was the only one to even put in a bid.
Makes that grand piano look rather tame, doesn’t it?
