Photo of a Couch off a Balcony 1

My first year of college, my roommates had an amazing giant couch they wanted to move in to our third floor apartment suite. The living room itself was big enough. Unfortunately, the 3 flights of stairs weren’t.

Luckily my roommates were engineering majors (aka insatiable problem solvers). They had the window disassembled and rope hung out the window opening within minutes.

We got an email this week from NES movers with some pictures of a recent move involving a similarly tricky multi-story furniture move situation. They handled it like the pros that they are! (more…)

Stages of Moving

Because moving is such a momentous part of life, there are a wide variety of emotions that come along with it. Let’s be honest, most of the time moving gets a bad rap.

Many people just lump moving into the “sucks” category… but we’re here to dispel that theory. Sure, moving can be overwhelming and scary at times, but there are also a heck of a lot of good things that come along with moving. Lots of wonderful, HAPPY emotions.

So let’s take a look at the 9 emotional stages (both the good & the bad) of moving… (more…)

Tips for a Moving Container MoveAbout a year ago, my husband and I packed up all of our belongings and moved from St. Louis to our current apartment in Chicago.  We rented a PODS container and we used HireAHelper for the “muscle” portion of our move. I’m not saying it was a good time, because is moving ever really fun? But it actually wasn’t too incredibly painful, and we both lived to tell the tale. In fact, we detailed our moving escapade right here on the HireAHelper blog. (more…)

Like every customer service representative at HireAHelper, I have assisted many – no, countless – no wait, an insane amount of customers looking for last minute help with their move. I’ve often questioned why anyone would wait so long to organize their move or to make sure the appropriate help they needed was properly calculated and confirmed.

My question was answered when my own moving plan took an unfortunate turn. After plans to have family and friends assist me fell through, I was stuck with a house full of heavy furniture and only me to move it (and in case you weren’t aware, I am not the Incredible Hulk). The kicker? My move was the NEXT day! So on Friday February 7th (the day before my move), I began searching for a moving truck and some help to load it. (more…)

This tale of two moves is from Gabi Logan and is the latest installment in our Real People series.

In the last few years, I’ve had the (mis)fortune of moving clear across the country, twice. Before I was engaged, the man who would become my husband relocated from Boston to California for work (a.k.a. completely paid for) without me and I had to follow a year later on my own dime. Just a year after I arrived in California, he had to move for work again, setting me up for my first full-service, cross country moving experience.

Casey-picHere’s another post from our “Real People” series written by web celebrity Casey O’Halloran from The DIY Playbook. Casey chats about her recent interstate move with PODS and HireAHelper from St. Louis to Chicago.

Let’s face it, moving is not fun. It’s difficult, time-consuming, stressful…all of those terrible things wrapped up into a poorly packed cardboard box. But we all know that moving is a very real and inevitable part of life.

My fiancé and I recently found new jobs in Chicago, and had to pack up our loft in downtown St. Louis. We brainstormed a few possible options on how to get all of our belongings from point A to point B, and still keep our relationship and sanity intact. (Spoiler Alert: the wedding is still on!)

This post is part of our Real People series from Catherine H., who recently used a Penske rental truck to move with her husband from New York to Kansas.

Penske Moving Truck

Moving from New York to Kansas was a tough decision to make

I was apprehensive about moving from a highly populated area with plenty of entertainment and activities to a place that seemed to have more cows than people. Nevertheless, the company my husband works for decided to open new headquarters in the Midwest. Finding a house was simple. Packing our things from the house we were already in and moving it? Not so simple.

Thursday Bram
Here’s another true story in our Real People series. This one is from Thursday Bram about her 2,800 mile cross country move using 1-800-PACK-RAT.

Two thousand eight hundred and five miles. I mapped out the long distance move my husband and I were planning from our old home in Maryland to our new home in Oregon and it came in at just a hair more than 2,800 miles. The number intimidated me: not only did I need to figure out how to get all of our belongings packed up, but I had to figure out how to get them all the way across the continental United States.

I was lucky, despite how much work I knew I’d have to do. I have a professional mover in the family. My dad has run a local moving company since I was in high school. I knew I needed some expert advice, so I phoned home.
